Water lilies are the dominant floating plant and can be found in abundance in all the water-filled prairies of the Okefenokee Refuge near Folkston, Georgia. Named for the Native American word that mean "Land of the Trembling Earth" is reference to the floating island developed after years decaying plant material such as water lillies and making layers of peat. This peat is five to ten feet deep in places, and eventually floats to the surface to become floating islands.
