The Okefenokee Refuge is home to many threatened and endangered species, such as Red-cockaded Woodpeckers, Wood Storks, Indigo Snakes, gopher tortoises and a wide variety of other wildlife species along with no fewer that 10,000 alligators like this one floating in the still water of the Suwanee Canal near Folkston, Georgia. The Suwanee Canal was built an attempt to drain large portions of the swamp in order to facilitate logging and eventual crop cultivation.
