  • Bar-Pilot Bruce Fendeg follows a family tradision Wednesday May 14, 2003 by disembarking a pilot boat at the public pier in downtown Brunswick, Ga. after returning from escorting a auto cargo ship out of the Port of Brunswick. The early departure tradision was started by his grandfather and saves the pilot nearly 30 minutes on the drive home to a warm bed and dinner with his family. Fendig is a third generation pilot that navigates safe passage for multimillion dollar cargo ships through the tricky channel at all times of day or night. His Grandfather was the first in his family to guide ships to sea from one of the state's fastest growing ports.
